Avast, me hearties!Welcome to the one and only, official, accept-no-substitutes Talk Like A Pirate Day Web site. Ever since Dave Barry mentioned us in his nationally syndicated newspaper column in 2002, what once was a goofy idea celebrated by a handful of friends has turned into an international phenomenon that shows no sign of letting up. Maybe you read about us on line.. Maybe you caught one of our radio or TV interviews. Or maybe you just stumbled on to our site while googling around for sites your mother probably wouldn't approve of. Or perhaps you're one of the millions of people from South Africa to the South Pole, from New York to the Pacific Northwest, who've made it your own personal excuse to party like pirates every September 19th (and sometimes for days before and after)! However you got here, stick around an' learn all about September 19 - International Talk Like A Pirate Day! Talk Like A Pirate DayWhat's new?We can hardly believe it, but 2012 marks the 10th anniversary of the worldwide celebration of International Talk Like A Pirate Day. We may have come up with the idea, but it's all of you who keep it going year after year, giving our crazy idea way more than its 15 minutes of fame. It's been the best year ever - and the fact that it fell midweek means lots of ye extended the celebration fer days, if not weeks! The first reported Talk Like A Pirate Day parrrrty of 2012 happened on Sept. 12, in Tasmania - and we've heard of festivities carryin' on into October!!) Stay tuned, and subscribe to The Poopdeck, by email or via our RSS feed, for stories of the aftermath! Meanwhile, check out the GooglyMapThing, below, or our calendarrrrr to find out how people around the world celebrated our 10th anniversary. Talk Like A Pirate Day hits Broadway! The Tony Award-winning Broadway show Peter and the Starcatcher was onboard for ITLAPD 2012 with a tarrrriffic Sept. 19 event they called Stache Day, after Black Stache, the mustachio'd rogue played by Matthew Saldivar. Hundreds o' pirates rallied at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre Box Office (256 West 47th Street) for free tickets and a chance to have their 'staches (real and otherwise) judged by our Close Personal Friend and Pulitzer Prize Winning Author Dave Barry, his "Peter and the Starcatcher" co-author Ridley Pearson and Black Stache hisself! Read all about - and check out the photos - on their Facebook page!. Want souvenirs? Check our Booty Store on Cafe Press for a brand-new 10th anniversary shirt and a host of other Talk Like A Pirate Day-themed T-shirts and goodies in honor of the big day. Here's what happened around the world on TLAPD 2012 (at least as far as we know):Thanks and a tip of our pirate hats to Sean Hasselback for the arrrrsome custom pirate version of our GoogleMapThing. He did a load o' work, survived the slammin' of his site with your hits on TLAPD, and provided us with the code t'host the map ourselves. IF YE DON'T SEE YER EVENT: Google splits the map into multiple pages after a certain number o' events are added. Use this link to get straight to Googlemaps, where ye can page through to see the rest. There's still time t'get yer event on th' map. Email the Webwench, and tell her what, when and (at least approximatey) where did what ye did, and she'll peg it to the map, and our calendarrrr, too! And share your photos with the world! There be three good ways to go about this: 1. If ye have a gallery at Flickr, Picasa or some other photo site, send the URL and we'll grab one to add to our gallarrrrry. 2. If ye be on Flickr, add yer best shots to the Talk Like A Pirate Day pool. 3. If ye must, email one good shot to the Webwench. Just one. Her mailbox explodes every year, an' it makes her cranky. A cranky Webwench is a scary Webwench. No videos, please - but links to where your videos can be found on the Web are fine. Please do not email photos to Ol' Chumbucket or Cap'n Slappy. Their mailboxes get jammed enough as it is, and the Cap'n in particular is ... challenged ... by technology newer than about 1856. News from Team PirateIt was a low-key Talk Like A Pirate Day this year for the Pirate Guys and Wenches. Ol' Chumbucket, Mad Sally and their crew, having settled into new digs in New Orleans (and made it through Hurricane Isaac relatively unscathed), spent the day gettin' their free Krispy Kreme donuts, grillin' a mess o' ribs and hangin' out with the family. Cap'n Slappy and Jezebel repaired to their favorite local watering hole, Calapooia Brewing, for a few pints and some with the local pirates. The party's all yours, mates - make the most of it!
